The General Medical Council is looking for a new Policy and External Affairs Officer in Wales
The General Medical Council is the UK’s independent medical regulator, working to protect, promote and maintain the health and safety of the public by ensuring proper standards in the practice of medicine by doctors. We do this to protect patient safety and support medical education and practice across the UK, by working with doctors, employers, educators, patients and other key stakeholders in the UK’s healthcare systems.
Are you looking to further your career in policy and external relations in a dynamic and topical environment? The GMC Wales is looking for an outstanding and proactive Policy and External Affairs professional to support our work at the heart of healthcare in Wales.
As Policy and External Affairs Officer, you will work in our National Wales team based in Cardiff. You’ll support our external affairs and policy work, working closely with the Policy and External Affairs team and colleagues across the Strategic Communications and Engagement Directorate in all four countries of the UK.
You’ll promote our work with key stakeholder groups, through drafting consultation responses, policy papers and briefings and ensuring that other GMC colleagues are aware of political, policy and legislative developments in Wales that have the potential to impact on our work. This interesting and rewarding role in a complex environment also involves providing strategic advice to GMC leadership, identifying new opportunities for collaborative projects and ensuring a shared understanding of mutual issues, agendas and goals.
The ability to speak Welsh is highly desirable.
Expertise and insight in policy, communications or external affairs is essential, and we welcome applications from those with experience of working with Government, the Welsh Parliament, third or private sector, or a healthcare organisation.

Your CV should demonstrate how you meet the following key skills:
- A good understanding of the Welsh political and health landscape with a background in external affairs, stakeholder management / communications or policy;
- Good written and oral communication skills with the ability to present information clearly, concisely and accurately.
